Hodge Hall: Week 39 -- The view from my desk

Workers installed much of the roof decking on the Hodge Hall expansion this week.

We have a roof! Well, at least part of one.

Workers began attaching the corrugated steel decking to the roof beams on the Hodge Hall expansion this week, and have completed at least the front portion of the Fee Lane side. They've gotten part of the 10th Street side, too.

With the wind and the cold and the rain this week, it's not a job I'd want to do, especially on a sloped roof. But they're tethered up there and work in groups with supervisors to stay safe.

When finished, the roof will be covered with the green/gray slate tile, similar to other buildings on IU's campus.

Workers continue to build out the third floor, adding more ducts and spraying fireproofing on the interior steel beams -- the chalky gray coating you can see on some of the exterior beams in the photo.

While we had some warm weather this week, we had some light snow flurries today, and the wind was bitter cold. But considering the weather on the East Coast, we'll take it. We've been very lucky actually, with no major weather delays this winter -- just one day with the blizzard a few weeks ago.

  1. It's nice to see the progress of your building coming together, right Jeni? Judging from the photos, you can be assured that the roof is sturdy and reliable for a very long time. Good luck! I can't wait to see it finished.
